Foamed Concrete Plays Important Role In Europe’s Largest Construction Project Crossrail

Propump Engineering has pumped around 600m³ of foamed concrete at two Crossrail sites in Central London. At a site in Liverpool Street Station, foamed concrete was used as part of the conversion of the station so that it can accommodate Crossrail trains in the future while the second infill will enable the removal of a Victorian sewer near Paddington Station.

At Liverpool Street, Propump worked with civil engineering contractor Galldris Construction to deliver a foamed concrete application to a heading in Eldon Street and a platform extension under Liverpool Street.

Propump supplied 164m³ of foamed concrete at a density of 700kgs/m³ and a strength of 2.0 N/mm² which was required to complete the infill at the Liverpool Street sites. The challenge for Propump was the awkward location with the foamed concrete having to be pumped 100 metres down a tunnel to reach the site as there was no vehicle access.

For the second Crossrail site adjacent to Paddington Station, Propump supplied over 616m³ of foamed concrete at a density of 1000kgs/m³ and a strength of 1.0 N /mm². Working with specialist formwork contractor Byrne Brothers Ltd, Propump had to fill a redundant 350 metre long Victorian sewer which ran longitudinally beneath Eastbourne Terrace. The foamed concrete was used as a temporary fill whilst piling is completed and will support the structure until the entire sewer is removed.

Regularly used to fill underground voids, encapsulate pipes and raise floor levels, the easy application of foamed concrete makes it ideal for building and construction sites when space is at a premium. Foamed concrete is pumpable, self-compacting and can mould itself to the shape of any void.

Propump Engineering is also demonstrating a commitment to safety with all of the company’s delivery drivers and heavy good vehicles (HGV’s) being fully compliant with new mandatory requirements put in place by Crossrail.
