Foamed concrete fills the voids at Southern Water’s highest CCS rated scheme

Foamed concrete is playing a crucial role in bringing cleaner seas to Sussex. An 11 kilometre sewer is currently being constructed between Brighton Marina and Peacehaven, where a new wastewater treatment works is also under construction. Due for completion in 2013, the scheme also includes three pumping stations, a sludge recycling centre and a new 2.5 kilometre long sea outfall.

To date, 150m3 of foamed concrete has been pumped into tunnels and shafts up to 15 metres below ground to encapsulate the sewer pipes and back fill where the drilling machinery had been. Although a relatively small project for Propump Engineering, deliverer of the world’s largest foamed concrete pour – a mammoth 600,000m³ – the Peacehaven treatment works illustrate the numerous qualities and green credentials of foamed concrete that have seen its popularity grow in recent years.

Part of a £300 million development for Southern Water, the works are being managed by a joint venture between industry leaders Veolia Water, Costain and MWH, under the consortium, 4Delivery Ltd. Rated by the Considerate Constructor Scheme (CCS) as one of the best sites in the country – scoring 37.5 out of 40 – it is the highest ever scoring Southern Water site, putting it in the top two per cent in the country for consideration for the local community and the workers on site.

An ideal substance for annulus infills in sewers, foamed concrete is pumpable free flowing and self compacting, ensuring all voids are eliminated. Foamed concrete specialists Propump Engineering can produce extensive quantities of foamed concrete per day, significantly reducing construction times, saving costs and minimising disruption.

Once complete the scheme will treat up to 95 million litres of wastewater generated each day by the residents of Peacehaven, Telscombe Cliffs, Ovingdean, Rottingdean, Saltdean and Brighton and Hove, ensuring all European standards on wastewater treatment are met.
